Woman's Cycles and Pregnancy
Hi there... I have a question for you that has been puzzling me for quiet some time. I have never had sex before and me and my boyfriend are thinking about trying it soon, but I'm very concerned about the consequences... so.. "When is it the safest time in a woman's cycle to have sex?"
Please help me out with info ..
thanx..
Shanti's Response:
Everytime a woman has unprotected sex, she is at risk for unwanted pregnancy (and sexually transmitted diseases!). So, there is no "safe" time during the cycle, per se. There are times when you can reduce the risks of unwanted pregnancy, and that is dependent upon your time of ovulation - although, here again, ovulation cycles also vary greatly in women, and, for some women, from one month to the next.
The key is for you to know when you are ovulating so that intercourse can be timed correctly to either avoid pregnancy (or to ensure fertilization if you are trying to get pregnant). Pregnancy is more likely to occur before or during ovulation than from intercourse following ovulation. It usually occurs during a six-day period that ends in ovulation.
There are all kinds of ways to determine the rhythm of your cycle and that may be useful for you to do at some point. However, I would strongly advise you to take the simple route: if you choose to engage in intercourse, use birth control. He should use a condom (which will also reduce the risk of STD for both of you) and you should use either a diaphragm or sponge or some other safe method of birth control. Places like Planned Parenthood can help you decide what method of control would be best for you.
Blessings, Shanti
