Kundalini Awakening
Kundalini Awakening is the process of unleashing latent energy hidden within the human nervous system. This energy's potential is so enormous that it can rejuvenate and reverse aging, cause total healing and restoration, increase the capacity for intelligence many-fold, expand consciousness and awareness and take us to a place of permanent bliss: Yogis called this place "samadhi"; Buddhists refer to it as "nirvana". Kundalini is what helps us to achieve "enlightenment".
The following are questions raised by a student regarding Kundalini Awakening.
What causes the energy to rise up the chakras and bring about this process of Kundalini Awakening?
Kundalini rises when the channels for it to rise are clear or if by some accident or misfortune, it rises without warning, thus risking severe emotional, physical and mental damage to the individual. (The damage occurs because chakras or the mental, vital and physical bodies were not adequately prepared for the awakening of this force.)
Note:
In rare cases, a severe blow to the tailbone will cause a spontaneous release. Kundalini releases have also been caused by mind altering drugs such as LSD. Individuals who have suffered these kinds of Kundalini risings have often suffered severe psychiatric problems as a result. Again, most problems with this energy occur when the body and mind have not been adequately prepared. This is why it is important to have the guidance of a Teacher during your reawakening process.
All humans have experiences with some episodes of Kundalini release, rather by intentional practice or not. (Most of these kinds of episodes are not permanent. The Kundalini only rises to the point where it hits a block and then it retreats into its coiled state at the base of the spine.)
The safest and most effective method to awaken Kundalini is through the use of meditations, mudras, kriyas, asanas, mantras, bandhas and pranayams to clear the nadis and the channels that the energy rises through. Intentional practice also leads to a permanent state of Kundalini Awakening where the adept is now in a higher state of consciousness and able to enter in and out of "samadhi" at will. True Kundalini Awakening involves the energy bolting straight through the spine from the base to the crown. When the spinal cord is fully enlivened, one will experience a strong electrical current and sense light within the center. All chakras will be charged and connected. A permanent state of bliss will be experienced.
And what energy (prana) catalyzes the entire process? Is it the sexual (first chakra) energy? ...do I conclude that the base chakra is not a crucial element in this process of awakening or do I, in fact, conclude that it has a lot to do with the process?
It is not a particular energy that "triggers" the Kundalini; there are events or circumstances that facilitate its awakening... It awakens as a result of the things I listed above. Kundalini has its own consciousness. Kundalini awakens when the path for it to ascend is clear (or when it is forced by accident or drugs, as mentioned before: this is similar to being roughly awakened from sleep, jolted). Once awakened, it begins to uncoil and rise up the center of the spine on its own accord. Kundalini is its own power, which is why it is the doorway back home. It has such power that saints and avatars such as Babaji, Christ and Lao Tzu, where able to transcend death.
The sexual energy is used as a mechanism to help clear and balance chakras, remove blocks, open the spinal channels and the nadis and to help balance the mental and physical bodies so the ascension of Kundalini is safe. All chakras must be clear and open for safe ascension to take place, including the first and second chakras. (Most of us have the first and second chakras clear which is why survival and sex are so strong in our natures.)
Am I to believe that by simply doing these practices certain Siddhis will result and even more importantly, that awakening will result?
It is your choice to believe. What Babaji would ask you to do is to approach Kriya Yoga as a scientist. Try the techniques and record for yourself what the results of the practice bring to you. Kriya yoga works very quickly so one or two months of consistent practice will yield the results that you can measure. Babaji, Yogananda, Lahiri Mahasaya, Sri Yukteswar and other great Masters have said that Kriya Yoga practice will lead to Kundalini awakening and then to enlightenment.
If so, is this in conflict to other Teachers who feel that practices and techniques are problematic (dualistic) because the Self is already attained?
The Self is already attained. However, for the overwhelming majority of humans, Self is not realized....this is the reason for "awakening". We are all asleep. Most of us have no recollection or awareness of our Divinity and therefore, we move and act as though we are slaves to this plane and to our egos. Buddha says we are all asleep. Kundalini awakens us.
...what makes Kriya yoga different from all other paths as well as what makes it similar?
It is different in that if offers teachings in particular postures, mantras, and breath and meditation techniques that vary from other techniques and which have been taught by Babaji himself to the teachers that gave us this knowledge. It is also said to be one of the fastest ways to clean karma and to render the ego defenseless. It is similar to other paths such as Buddhism and Taoism where we are taught that there is a Self and that Self must be realized. Kriya Yoga is not a religion, however. It is a set of teachings that involve diet, yoga, mantras, meditations, mudras, etc. and selfless service as a pathway home. Many people from various religions practice Kriya Yoga.
What happens when the Kundalini does fully awaken?
According to Marshal Govindan, when Kundalini is fully awakened, all dormant areas of the brain area awakened and Divinity is manifested in the individual. The physical body undergoes change as well, as a complete process of transformation is set in motion. The cells are charged with high voltage energy and hormonal secretions also change. When the Kundalini reaches the sahasrara chakra (crown), a state of "nirvikalpa" (unfluctuating) samadhi occurs. This is the highest level of consciousness.
